A Message From the Founders
Dear readers, Welcome to our website. Launching Vaca Daffan Law is the realization of a dream to combine our zeal for representing the underdog with our skills in consumer protection law. Long before we met, we travelled parallel paths. We were drawn to the law for the same reason: we wanted tools to fight for people who don’t have a voice in the halls of power. We began our careers as legal services lawyers, conducting outreach to immigrant communities and representing low-wage workers in a wide range of cases. Then, we each chose a path leading to the Federal Trade Commission. We wanted to learn how to achieve broader, more systemic results for the communities we’d been serving. At the FTC, Monica litigated on the financial practices team, helped manage the fraud shop, and led the division responsible for consumer reports, data analysis, and refunds. Later, she served as Deputy Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection. She has developed deep expertise in the areas of fraud, privacy and surveillance, and emerging technologies. Kati spent most of her FTC career litigating and managing cases in the fraud program. She also served as an attorney advisor to former Chairwoman Edith Ramirez, and later as Acting Deputy General Counsel for Legal Counsel, where she was the agency’s Chief FOIA Officer. Her areas of expertise include robocalls, junk fees, multilevel marketing, and repair restrictions. As our paths converged at the FTC, we found we share a deep interest in the difficult problems at the heart of consumer protection. We enjoy delving into complex factual records and contracts, as well as grappling with the thorniest conceptual questions in the field. We are especially interested in the consumer harms that accompany new technological developments, including problems related to both private and government surveillance. We also closely follow the intersection of workers’ rights and consumer protection, including issues around business opportunities, multilevel marketing, franchises, and the gig economy. Together, our 38+ years at the FTC gave us the knowledge and tools to tackle complex consumer protection problems on a national scale. Now we’re bringing that experience to the private sector. We founded this firm so we can aggressively pursue the greatest possible impact for consumers. If you think we may be able to help you or the community you serve, we hope you’ll reach out. Sincerely,
